Locally based, still-life fine art photographer and mother of two Gemma Dawks, had cause to celebrate last weekend as she picked up 3 international awards at The Guild of Professional Photographers annual awards night. These are in addition to the 35 awards that she won throughout 2013 in their monthly competitions.
The Guild which has been in existence since 1988, is a highly respected photographic body dedicated to enhancing skills in the art, craft and profession of photography. It organises what is potentially the most demanding of annual photographic competitions. Photographers must submit several images a month for assessment over the course of a year, and only those with the highest combined scores at the end of the year are awarded the Guild’s coveted ‘Top 10’ Photographer award!
At its recent Awards night the Guild announced that Gemma Dawks had won not just one but two Top Ten awards for 2013 for her fine art photography as well as being one of only a few people awarded the distinction of becoming a member of “The Photographers Bar”. The Photographers Bar is a unique distinction awarded to very few photographers who have successfully had images assessed by the Guild over the course of a year and attained a score equating to an award for each entry made, thereby evidencing an exceptional level of professional skill and consistency.
Gemma Dawks says “I am absolutely thrilled to have received these awards. After a lifelong passion for photography I started my professional journey at the end of 2012 and I never imagined that a year on and with lots of hard work I would be winning international awards. I consider my work to be as much art as photography and after I’ve captured the image in camera the magic really starts to happen as I begin adding light and depth and bringing in texture and detail. My mouse is my paintbrush and my monitor my canvas.”
Guild Director Steve Thirsk said ‘This is an incredible achievement! With nearly 10,000 images assessed from throughout the UK, Europe and further afield for Gemma to receive two Top Ten awards from the Guild and to have gained membership to “The Photographers Bar” is clear evidence of her consistently high standard of photographic skills. Gemma should be very proud of her outstanding achievements – I am not surprised her images are sought after as I can only applaud them!’
Gemma prints all her own work from her home in Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire. Her prints and canvases are currently only available to buy at the monthly craft and gift market in Tetbury and on her website. With two young children, a husband and a Bernese mountain dog, time is precious and markets and work have to fit in between the school runs. This year Gemma hopes to gain qualification with the Guild and extend her range of floral and still life fine art photography maybe even expanding into fine art portraiture.
